In the silence of the night, under the starry sky of Ostional, Costa Rica, I am about to embark on the most perilous journey of my short life. Wrapped in the secure darkness of my egg, I feel the time has come. I am a little turtle, ready to hatch, carrying the legacy of a lineage that has braved many dangers.
The hatching is imminent. Each crack of my shell is a call to adventure, a step towards the unknown. Ostional beach, which was also my mother’s cradle, is a theater of life and death where every second counts. I must brave predators – birds of prey, voracious crabs, and other creatures of the night – in a frantic race towards the Pacific Ocean, my new sanctuary.
This fight for survival is not just mine. It symbolizes the ongoing struggle of my species, the green ridley turtles, against the trials of time and human threats.
Once, our numbers declined, assailed by unscrupulous poachers and environmental dangers. But we have persevered, supported by conservation efforts and the protection of our nesting sites, thanks to increasingly aware local peoples.
Why is this struggle so crucial?
Because each of us who reaches the ocean is a hope, a spark of life that perpetuates the chain of our existence. We are essential actors in the marine ecosystem, contributing to the health of coral habitats and seagrass beds through our feeding and migrations. Our survival is intrinsically linked to the health of the planet.
To survive, I must show unwavering determination. Instinct and the will to live guide me, but it is my courage in the face of adversity that will define me. I must hurry, use cunning to escape predators, and never lose sight of my goal: the ocean, where I can finally swim free, explore the vast blue expanses, and one day, return to this same beach to perpetuate the cycle of life like my ancestors.
Thus, under the benevolent gaze of the moonlight, I pursue my quest, armed with courage and driven by hope. For in the heart of every baby turtle venturing towards the ocean lies the promise of a better future, for us and for the Earth. The cries of predatory birds in the sky remind me every second of the urgency to go directly towards that ocean of freedom.
When finally, after a journey fraught with obstacles, I reach the first caressing waves of the Pacific, a sense of boundless freedom will overwhelm me. Freed from the constraint of my shell, escaped from the hungry claws of terrestrial predators, this first contact with water will be a revelation.
The ocean, with its vastness and depth, will offer me a world of infinite possibilities. Each little wave that carries me will remind me that I have survived the most dangerous of journeys, the journey of birth.
In this magical moment, I will no longer simply be a survivor; I will become an explorer of vast expanses, free to chart my own course in the maze of ocean currents. Freedom will not only be physical but deeply embedded in my being, for I will have overcome the obstacles that stood between me and my destiny.
The ocean, with its mysteries and wonders, will become my domain, where I can swim towards distant horizons, discover secret sanctuaries under the waves, and above all, live according to the immutable laws of nature.
Humans hold a decisive influence on the fate of marine turtles, like myself, by adopting a responsibility ethic and implementing preservation strategies.
Plastic pollution represents a serious threat to our species, leading to accidental ingestion or entanglement. Taking measures to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic materials, as well as cleaning up coastlines and ocean floors, is crucial for the preservation of our habitats.
By taking these actions, humans can significantly contribute to the survival of our species and the health of the oceans, ensuring that future generations of marine turtles – and humans – can thrive together on this planet we share.
This freedom is the ultimate gift of my struggle, a birthright for which my family and ancestors fought fiercely. It symbolizes not only my individual survival but also the continuity of my species, an unbroken chain of lives that stretches through the ages.
Diving into the ocean, I dive into the history of my lineage, honoring those who paved the way before me and forging an indelible link with future generations.
