The air route between Toronto and Guanacaste, operated by Porter Airlines, will now be available year-round rather than being limited to the peak travel season.
Originally scheduled to operate only during high season, the route delivered such strong results that the airline decided to extend its service to the Daniel Oduber International Airport, located in Liberia.
According to the airline’s schedule, flights will operate twice weekly—on Wednesdays and Sundays—from May to October. During the high season, from November to April, the route will increase to six weekly frequencies.
This expansion is the result of a joint strategy between Guanacaste Airport and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, a collaboration that positioned Guanacaste as the first airport in Central America to welcome Porter Airlines operations on an international route to Toronto.
In addition to Toronto, Porter Airlines also offers direct flights between Guanacaste and Ottawa. Currently, Guanacaste Airport provides six direct routes to Canadian cities: Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Calgary—further strengthening Canada’s connectivity with Costa Rica’s Pacific region.
“Living in Toronto means dealing with long, sometimes exhausting winters. Knowing that I can now fly directly to Guanacaste year-round completely changes how I plan my trips. Costa Rica has become my personal refuge—a place where I truly recharge. This annual route makes the country even more accessible, without compromises or complicated connections.”
— Martin Letang, Toronto resident
Airport officials note that this year-round service expansion will increase seat availability and reinforce Canadian travelers’ preference for Guanacaste as their primary gateway into Costa Rica.
Canada remains Costa Rica’s second-largest source market for international tourists, surpassed only by the United States. Last year alone, more than 260,000 Canadian visitors arrived in Costa Rica by air.
