In the context of a changing climate, Costa Rica is facing the beginning of the year 2024 marked by forecasts of drought. The national authorities are calling for increased vigilance in water management, urging residents, businesses, and industrial sectors to adopt water-saving practices during the upcoming dry season.
This initiative aims to ensure the continuous availability of this vital resource while anticipating possible rationing measures in certain areas of the country.
According to the National Institute According to the National Institute of Meteorology (IMN), lower than normal precipitation is expected for the first half of 2024, thus worsening the already existing deficits in water reserves. The coming months are expected to be particularly challenging for the country’s aquifers, reservoirs, and watercourses.
Faced with these forecasts, the government and hydraulic authorities recommend measured water consumption, calling for solidarity between the public and private sectors. Domestic water use is advised to be limited to 15 cubic meters per month for households.
Marco Cordero, the Water Intendant, emphasizes the importance of responsible management of water resources to ensure their sustainability. He specifies that interruptions in water supply will only be justified in case of emergency or unexpected failure of infrastructure.
During rationing, national standards require that companies offer alternative solutions, such as the distribution of water by tanker trucks or the establishment of temporary water points, to ensure a safe and potable supply. Rationing is likely to vary according to regions and local networks, due to the decentralization of infrastructure.
The government is committed to communicating in advance about potential water shortages, thus allowing families and businesses to prepare. Among the suggested conservation strategies are the collection of rainwater, the reuse of greywater for irrigation, and a reduction in daily consumption.
With the cooperation and foresight of all, Costa Rica hopes to overcome these environmental challenges without compromising access to water for its citizens.
