Costa Rica continues to shine on the international stage with its remarkable achievements in agriculture, particularly in pineapple production. According to Trade Map data, the country is the world’s leading exporter of pineapples and pineapple juice, and it ranks second globally in banana exports, a product deeply tied to the nation’s agricultural identity.

Bananas remain one of Costa Rica’s most emblematic agricultural exports. With approximately 42,000 hectares of plantations, primarily located in the Caribbean and Southern Pacific regions, the country is among the largest global producers and exporters.

Areas like Limón and Puntarenas play a pivotal role in this production.

These regions benefit from an ideal tropical climate, fertile soil, and consistent rainfall, creating perfect conditions for cultivating this valuable resource.

Major banana companies, including Chiquita, Dole, and Del Monte, partner with local producers, generating thousands of jobs in rural communities.

This sector makes a significant contribution to Costa Rica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and serves as a major source of foreign currency.

In 2023, banana exports generated approximately $1.2 billion, underscoring the strategic importance of this fruit to Costa Rica’s economy. The country primarily exports bananas to the European Union and the United States, where it is the leading and fourth-largest supplier, respectively.

A Diverse Agricultural Excellence

In addition to its success with bananas, Costa Rica excels in other agricultural sectors. The country is the world’s top supplier of cassava to the European Union and the fourth-largest to the United States. It is also renowned for exporting tropical flowers, hearts of palm, and processed food products, further enhancing its global position.

Sustainability at the Heart of the Industry

Costa Rica has implemented sustainable agricultural practices, particularly in banana plantations. Certifications such as Rainforest Alliance and GlobalG.A.P. ensure high standards in environmental protection, workers’ rights, and product quality. These initiatives boost the country’s competitiveness in international markets and highlight its commitment to sustainable development.

Regions like the Caribbean coast benefit from a perfect tropical climate, rich soils, and abundant rainfall, enabling year-round production of Costa Rica’s world famous bananas.

A Growing Industry

Between January and August 2024, Costa Rica’s total goods exports reached $12.958 billion, a 7% increase compared to the previous year. Growth was driven by agriculture (+7%), medical devices (+12%), and the food industry (+5%), showcasing the dynamism of Costa Rica’s economic model.

With 2,400 exporting companies, 4,400 products, and exports to 168 destinations, Costa Rica has cemented its role as a key player in global trade.
