The country surpasses pre-pandemic levels with a 10% increase in visitors

In 2024, Costa Rica’s tourism industry has reached unprecedented heights. With an estimated 2.6 million visitors expected by the end of the year, this marks a 10% increase compared to 2023 and a surpassing of pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019. According to the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), this growth is accompanied by a significant rise in foreign currency revenue, which is projected to exceed 5 billion dollars. Just from January to September, the Central Bank of Costa Rica reported $4.2 billion generated by tourism, undeniable proof of the sector’s solid recovery.

The dynamism of tourism is also reflected in employment. In the third quarter of 2024, 189,093 direct jobs in the tourism sector were recorded, according to the Continuous Employment Survey (ECE) of the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). This figure, the highest in the last three years, is driven by activities such as accommodation, restaurant services, transportation, car rentals, and cultural and recreational services.

“Tourism is, without a doubt, the most important economic activity in Costa Rica,” declared William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism. “Its impact is measured not only through these impressive figures of visitors, foreign exchange, and direct jobs but also in the well-being of thousands of families across the country.”

Rodríguez also highlights that when combining direct and indirect jobs, nearly 25% of the Costa Rican workforce is connected to the tourism sector. “These results demonstrate the commitment and excellence of tourism players in Costa Rica, solidifying our position as a unique and competitive global destination,” he added.

This record-breaking year of 2024 perfectly reflects what we have experienced on the ground: a surge in tourism, particularly among Francophones, drawn to nature and authentic discoveries. Costa Rica’s exceptional biodiversity and the quality of its experiences are key factors. Seeing the country surpass pre-pandemic levels is a great reward for all those involved in tourism and motivates us to continue promoting this destination in 2025.
